Dorette2-8: Great vintage knitting pattern from 1940s wartime pattern to save coupons and use old sweaters to make new! This great patten is in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply. Original shades suggested were Epsom Green, Azure, Aconite, Bristol Red, although I suspect any colours available would have been used. To fit bust 35 inches, work on size larger needles for a 36 inch, or smaller for 34 inch. If making the larger one allow a bit more wool. Nice easy fair isle this one.

Dorette2-10: How about this for a perky retro hat? This pattern comes from the wartime , early 1940s and is useful as it can be worn as shown or as a long French style cap. worked in vintage 4ply so would work well in modern double knitting. Knitted on four needles ( or circular one) size 8 imperial (4mm), easy to work and quick to knit - great for Christmas gift - a student would love this - they are so fashionable at the moment. Colours suggested are navy, red and white, with navy as the ground colour - would look great with red as the ground colour as well.

This one is so typical of the time, my mother said she made one just like this the month before she joined the WAAF in 1940 - and wore it until after she had me, which was in 1949! Knitted in vintage 3ply, so use modern 4ply and work a tension square to make sure you don't need to change needles to get the correct size. The instructions are for 32 inch bust, if made in thicker wool or on larger needles you could go up to a 34 inch bust, see how many stitches you knit to an inch in the wool chosen and change needles to get the size you want.

Ladyship 3204: Great vintage ladies dolman style jumper with fair isle yoke. This pattern also includes instructions for the little cap. Knitted in what was called 'chubby' wool it was similar to a chunky, but not too thick yarn to knit to a tension of 5.5st and 6.5 rows to and inch (2.5cm) on old size 6 (5mm). Great for river trips, spring cruise or a boating holiday. To fit 32-33 and 34-45 or there abouts! Very easy to knit.

If knitted in modern 4ply would probably work nearer to size, or on 10 & 9 in double knitting it could knit up to even bigger size, experiment with tension squares and different plys and needle combinations.

NWI-1F: Great vintage fair isle knitting pattern for easy to knit jumper, cap and scarf from 1933. Not really fair isle but thought it fitted in here nicely. It is feather and fan stitch with a dash of colour - so it does come under multi-- coloured knitting! The beret style cap is super and the scarf is so easy to make. Colour suggested are China Green with Mid Elephant (presumably grey!) Knitted in a 'sylko' yarn. But try a modern 4ply to see how this works out if you prefer. Probably medium size. There are a few other items in this pattern but they are all crochet, a shopping bag, slippers and a necklace and earrings.
