Bestway 1359R: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern bedside rugs 1930s. Hand knitted in very thick wool on old size 3 or 6.5mm easy and so different. A great challenge. But you can make them smaller or in lighter ply wool or cotton to make them more manageable, lots of possibility. It is not so important what size needles you use or the size of the finished rug, but that it is a firm stable fabric that is produced, this will be easier with a thick firm wool or yarn - not too soft. The rare breeds wool, especially Herdwick, is great for this. The one on the takes 4lbs ( 1.80 kg) 6ply rug wool and measures 50"x 30"

Bestway 1362R: Great vintage knitting pattern 1930s rugs. This is similar to the one above but 3 different designs. Great for the bedroom or fireside, even for the bathroom if knitted in cotton. It suggests to use rug yarn, so try thick Aran or chunky yarn in a tension square. The pattern suggest 4lbs which is approx 2kg or 1920g! One rug measures 50 inches by 27, another 30 inches by 49 and the other one 50 inches by 30 inches so they are nearly 6 feet long. A great challenge. But you can make them smaller or in lighter ply wool or cotton to make them more manageable, lots of possibilities.

Bestway 1426: Great vintage knitting pattern for oblong rug 1940s. This is a great wartime pattern to save money, this rug is knitted in 6ply rug wool, but any thick chunky wool or yarn will do that knits to a tension of 3 stitches to the inch and 7 rows to 2 inches on imperial no6 needles (5mm). At this tension will make up to 47 inches by 29 inches. But of course you can knit it any size. It will take about 50 balls of wool (50g) (5 x 1bs of rug wool which is 80oz and there are about 30g in an old 1oz ball) There are also instructions for the CROCHET rug shown on the right.

Weldons 488: Great vintage knitting pattern from the 1930's for fireside rug and bedroom mat. The fireside rug is made in sections, with diagram to show how to put it together, there are 4 variations to choose from. The deep pile bedroom rug measures 24" x 12", but instructions are included for larger sizes and how to adapt to other patterns. This is a great little leaflet for those who are looking for something different. 6ply rug yarn is used, but any thick wool that knits to the same tension will work, there is an actual size picture of the yarn used. About 3 stitches and 6 row to an inch on no 7 needles (4.5mm) Rug making is a great hobby and there are so many designs and ideas around.
