Bestway 935: Great vintage ladies accessories knitting pattern from 1940s. From the fabulous era of make do and mend comes a beautiful collection of collars to add life to old jumpers or cardigans. There are three knitted collars and two crocheted ones and a knitted bead necklace. My mother said she used to spend a lot of her time waiting in cars during the war so made quite a few of these types of things as well as her own underwear. She was a driver in the RAF.

Craftwear 01: Great vintage jewellery knitting crochet pattern 1940s. There are instructions for KNITTING the Necklet as shown on cover plus a two row chocker, and in CROCHET instructions for bracelet, earrings, brooch, belt and serviette ring. The pattern give quantities in yards, but you can work out how much to use of which ever thread you choose as soon as you have worked one of two things, no tension given, but it looks as if the craft cord would have been about cotton 20 as size 13 (2.25mm) needles are used in the knitting and size 0 crochet hook (not sure of the modern hook size).

Use any colour you have available of knitting wool, this one advises to use pulled back wool or unpicked wool to save money and coupons for wool. Homecraft 452: Great vintage CROCHET pattern 1940s hat belt beaded. This little set is great for evenings, weddings and other special occasions. Crocheted in Cronit rayon, no thread size given, but the rayon was a perle or shiny synthetic cotton, so trial by working a sample would be best as there is not tension suggestions either. The sequin and bead trimming can be omitted as they are added after pieces have been worked. There are other hat and belt crochet patterns on the crochet pages under ladies patterns that will guide as to how much cotton would be needed and tension etc.

Hemmingway Ties -1: This lovely, very rare vintage book comes from the USA in the early part of the 20th century, possible before the First World War, no date. The instructions are for silk ties crocheted in 9 designs. Pearsall's 383: Collars and blouse front knitting pattern from 1940s. These patterns were popular during the world wars as they saved money and recycled clothes and yarns. This one is for two different collars and front often worn with a suit at work to save washing and knitting a whole blouse. These were knitted in rayon, but any yarn can be used, just work a tension square before you start.
