Bestway 116-Hot water bottle cover and slippers: Great vintage bed time set knitting pattern from the thrifty 1940s. The bottle bag will cover average rubber hot water bottle and the slippers will fit average fit. If you can obtain some slipper soles, sometimes sold on Ebay or use bottoms from old slippers or you can use double folded felt. (click for more hot water bottle covers)

Bestway 117-25: Great vintage ladies slipper knitting pattern 1930s. This pair of super bedroom slippers is very easy to make, to fit a size 5 foot. They even have a knitted lining. Worked in vintage 3ply wool so try modern 4ply in a tension square, worked in pink, blue and natural - very typical colours of the time.

Bestway 799: Children slippers, shoes sandals Crochet pattern from late 1030s. All made in rug wool - all knitted to fit children 2-5 years, bedroom slippers, Mary Jane shoes, sandals and cross over strappy sandals just like Mum's. Lovely retro pattern soles worked in knitting. One of my favourite patterns!

Bestway 1047: Great vintage pattern for two pairs of bedroom slippers from 1940s. Loop top boots and slipper sock style both knitted in oddments of modern 4ply. The lace boots have string soles that are crocheted. The slipper sock style also have a crochet sole. It is easy to make either bigger or smaller in size by casting on more or less stitches. To fit sizes 3, 4, 5 and 6 or even larger if needed.

Bestway 1164: Fabulous vintage slipper CROCHET pattern 1940s. Carpet slippers made from carpet yarn. This pattern has 6 designs for crochet slippers children's and adults - pre-made soles are suggested, but with a little ingenuity soles can be crochet, made from felt, use old slippers or shoes for shape of sole. This would also have been available through the Austerity Years of the war. Great for that Christmas surprise!

Bestway 1185: Great vintage house shoes knitting pattern from 1940s. This superb little pattern explains that these are very popular with prisoners of war when worked in larger sizes - what a fabulous idea! Worked in two strands of double knitting wool, the pattern explains how to make larger or smaller sizes very easily. The rainbow house shoes are very cosy and have a choice of soles - you can make them of felt or covered card or insoles (rough side outward so that they don't slip.)

Bestway 1246: Fabulous mens slipper knitting pattern 1940's. Although ready made soles are used, they can be home made from felt or crocheted or knitted or even cork can be used, or  ready made insoles. There are knitted  and crocheted designs in this pattern to fit sizes 8, 9, 10, 11 shoe size. They are knitted in various yarn, alway work a tension square to see if hook or needles need changing. This would make a great project for Christmas - something very different and practical!

Crochet in double knitting yarn or 3ply doubled. The sole can be made from an old pair of cloth shoes or from soft leather lined with silk or cotton, or canvas. To fit around 2 years. Homecraft 333: Great vintage children's slippers knitting pattern 1940s. Bedroom slippers in crochet for 3-4 years, sole 6" long, knitted bootee 3-4 years old 6" long soles made from flannel or felt and knitted 'wellie' sock for 6-8 years old.

Homecraft 313: Great vintage CROCHET slipper pattern 1940s. This is a war time pattern to save money and coupons - make your own slippers using either existing slipper soles, cut up felt hat,  old carpet felt or similar. This still applies today, there are all sorts of things to use for the soles including crocheting some to match existing slippers, then the finished uppers are stitched to the soles. To fit ladies 4, 5 or 6 (old UK sizes) It is suggested that you use unpicked wool for further economy, you can use modern 4ply or double knitting wool.    .

Weldons 322: Vintage CROCHET patten slippers for men ladies 1940s. Worked in in double strands of vintage 3ply, nearer modern double knitting, work tension square to make sure. You can create your own soles by drawing round you foot and making a sole piece from leather, felt or other thick fabric. You can always knit or crochet a sole shaped piece. It is still possible to obtain soles to sew on from craft shops.

Weldons 416: Great vintage ladies slippers knitting and crochet pattern from 1940s wartime. There are 4 design to knit or crochet in the pattern. Top sandals are crochet and to fit she size 5 or 6, garter stitch slippers, mules and bedroom slippers are all knitted. Innersoles for shoes or slipper soles are suggested, but felt or layered felt, card and material can be used. All are 5-6 shoe size but are easy to make larger or smaller.

Weldons 537: Vintage CROCHET patten for sandals 1930/40's. Fabulous shoes made for the summer, it suggests using thick insoles as a sole,which is easily replaceable as it wears.  There are instructions for making the wedge from cork, cardboard! or wood. The benefit from these shoes are that they will fit as you make the to match your own foot and arch shape. My mother made a pair for herself one summer in 1940 out of fine string and cork inner soles, a bit of glue and a lot of luck - they lasted the summer and she replaced the soles the following year.

Fair Isle Slippers -1: Great vintage ladies slippers knitting pattern. This pair have lovely fair isle design and knitted in double knitting to fit 4-5 and 6-6. The pattern suggests slipper soles, which are no longer available, but you can use insoles, felt or knit the bottoms. I am trying to source some slipper soles from abroad at the moment.

SS42-12-7 Slippers: Great vintage ladies knitting pattern for fair isle slippers from 1940. To make your own slippers was a great way to use up odds and ends of wool and felt as well as economise on store bought items. They were easy to knit and comfy to wear and you could make them to fit. These are so easy to work, and are knitted like trainer socks in the round on 4 fine needles. The soles can be strengthen by adding an in sole on the outside or work some coils of crochet to fit sole.

To make your own slippers was a great way to use up odds and ends of wool and felt as well as economise on store bought items. They were easy to knit and comfy to wear and you could make them to fit. These are so easy to work, the soles are made from coiled crochet cord, could use a knitting jenny and make a long sausage to wind round. Dia gram and instructions included. These are also lined at the sole (sheep skin insoles can be used or the foam shaped ones work well too.)
