Bestway 2182: Great vintage fair isle knitting pattern for baby 1940s. This little gem is so sweet, a miniature traditional fair isle jumper! Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply for sizes stated and modern 3ply for a smaller size. Always work a tension square and change needles if needed. To fit 6-12 months and 1-2 years. There is another design with baby cables, another very sweet pattern. Two for the price of one in this pattern. The Fair isle one is for 1-2 years (23.5inch chest) and the cable one is for the younger size 6-12 months (20 inch chest). The fair isle colours suggested, so would be typical of the time, white ground, with shell pink and pale blue. This is because as wool was rationed, it could be made from left overs from baby, or adult vest and underwear knitting or unravelled wool. This pattern from the early 1940s or possibly the late 1930s as it is a little bigger than the wartime ones, is knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square and will fit 18 inch chest. Bestway 2283: Great vintage baby pram set knitting pattern from the late 1930s. This set is very cute and very typical of the era with the little pixie bonnet and smattering of embroidery to give the effect of fair isle at the edge, this is repeated on collar and cuffs of coat. What a super little pushchair! This set is knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. There are instructions for bonnet, coat, leggings and mittens to fit 24-25 inch chest, very simple broken rib pattern. This is one of my favourite patterns.

Bestway 2311: Great vintage baby matinee sets knitting and crochet pattern from 1940s. There are two designs in this pattern, the top one with angora chickens is to fit a 232 inch chest, original knitted in blue and white. Try modern 4ply in a tension square using a smaller size needle. The motif can be worked in an ordinary yarn to match ply of main jacket. The bottom set is crocheted and to fit 18 inch chest, the bonnet has pretty silk ribbons with rosettes at cheeks, and net ruffles under bonnet brim.

Bestway B2321: Great vintage baby knitting pattern from 1940s. There are three different designs in this pattern all to fit baby and toddler. The dress and jacket at top will fit 2-3 years and is worked in a hemstitch stitch to fit 20-22 inch chest, the middle dress and jacket is knitted in berry stitch will fit 6-12 months with 20 inch chest and the little boys suit including socks will fit 1-2 years or 22 inch chest. The knickers are in the fashion of a sunsuit and knitted in 3ply yarn. Watch for the different needles needed for wool or nylon in this pattern. From the late 1940s there was  new nylonese yarn produced.

Bestway 2329: Great vintage knitting pattern for baby from the 1940s. There are instructions for a matinee jacket, bonnet and bootees in vintage 3ply (modern 4ply) to fit 17" chest and instructions for the blanket worked in vintage 4ply (modern baby double knitting) Always work a tension square. The blanket measures 31.5 inches by 29 inches.

Bestway 2346:  Great vintage baby blanket knitting pattern from 1940s. The one everybody has been asking for! Blankets galore! 6 blankets to knit in 3ply, 4ply, kwiknit, and double knitting. One of them is in crochet.  The brushed rug is accomplished by brushing, after working with a teazle brush (available from a craft shop or from us) or knit with  brushed yarn.

The other one is an off set button up with embroidered detail. Very unusual styling on these two reflecting the 1930s. Bestway 2388:  Great vintage baby knitting pattern from 1940s. This is a cute little pattern, these Bestway were such good value for money!  Here we have two matinee sets plus a pram blanket. To fit a 19-20 inch chest (birth to 6 months) for size stated use modern 4ply in a tension square, if knitted in modern 3ply pure wool will be newborn to 3 months.

Bestway A2407: Great vintage baby matinee jacket set knitting pattern from 1940s. This wartime pattern has instructions for two little sets. One in a knitted ridge pattern with pretty bonnet, which is created by using a very large needle for one row and smaller ones knitting a few more rows. The other is a crocheted set with loopy stitch round the edges and a pretty loopy brim to the bonnet. The knitted one is to fit 9-18 months and the crochet one to fit birth - 6 months.

This pattern has two designs, one a matinee jacket with black skirt and round neck, to fit 6-12 months, (up to a 24 inch chest).The other is a matinee cardigan, double breasted worked in two colours to fit 3-9 months (20 inch chest). Both worked in a vintage 3ply that would be similar to a modern 4ply, always work a tension square.

Bestway A2527: Great baby layette knitting pattern from 1940s. This super layette has instructions for shawl, dress, jacket, vest, bootees and mittens - easy to make a bonnet from another pattern and work in the feather and fan pattern on the brim. This one is worked on slightly larger needles to give a looser, lighter fabric. Dress to fit 18-20 inches, work in a modern 3ply on smaller needles to get a smaller size. Always work a tension square. Shawl is 44 inches square.

Bestway A2532:  Great vintage baby knitting pattern for three 1940s matinee jackets. This pattern has three different designs to fit birth to 6 months or 18 inch chest. The pattern calls for 3ply vintage wool that is similar to modern 3ply baby yarn. Always work a tension square.

Bestway A2434: Great vintage baby knitting pattern for matinee sets 1940s. This little set is so cute with the turn back on the bonnet and little thumb in the mittens -I remember trying to get my babies little thumbs in those- and keeping them there! But they are easy to knit omitting these. To fit 6-12 months, no chest size given. The little dash of colour was very cheerful during those days and using up little bits of wool in fair isle decoration was very sensible, this one suggest white with blue contrast, but you can do any combination. I have made the bonnet and bootees in pink cashmere with creamy white contrast - looked super! Always work a tension square to get correct tension, use modern 3ply for a smaller fit, for new born.

There are three designs in this pattern for babies 3-18 months., The top design is to fit 9-18 months, middle one is to fit 6-9 months and the bottom one is the fit 3-6 months. Bestway A2437: Great vintage baby cardigan knitting pattern 1940s. This little duo is for a cardigan birth to 9 months and has a 18 inch chest and little coat 9-15 months, and will fit up to a 22 inch chest - worked in vintage 3ply, so try a modern 4ply in a tension square. If you would like a smaller size try knitting in modern 3ply - I made the cardigan in Patons 3ply pure merino wool and it came up to a just under 17 inch chest, great for newborn.

Knitted in vintage 3ply, so work a tension square and see if you get a better size in modern 4ply.  There are instructions for bonnet and jacket and pilch (nappy or diaper cover) Jacket to fit 19-21 inch chest, so if you would like to knit a set for new born or smaller baby try using modern 3ply. These older patterns are so dainty and pretty with style and unusual features not seen today.

Bestway A2406: Great vintage knitting pattern for a dress and cardigan set for toddler from 1940s. This lovely pattern has instructions for this easy to knit dress and simple, button at neck cardigan. Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply. Knitted with moss stitch yoke and embroidered panel. The skirt is made of panels of moss and stocking stitch, forming box pleats. The jacket is embroidered round the border and buttons at the neck. Should fit up to a 23 inch chest. From 1-2 years. The top one is for a 17" chest, the cardigan is for a 21" chest and the other matinee is for 19" chest. Bestway A2478: Super baby cardigan vintage knitting pattern 1940s. This lovely pattern had two little cardigans to fit 9-18 months 21-22 inch chest. Super retro styles for party or christening or for babies retro look at a wedding. Looks lovely with little dress or super smart with little jeans. Instructions for long or short sleeves. Worked in vintage 3ply so for this size use modern 4ply and do a tension square to see if you need to change needles, but for a smaller size use modern 3ply and smaller needles for 3 month size.

Bestway A2550: Fabulous vintage knitting pattern from the late 1940s for three little hug-me-tights. This is one of my favourite patterns and knits up beautifully. They are great in the summer and make lovely addition to any christening out fit if worked in pure baby wool for that creamy look or bright white synthetic yarn for a sparkle. All worked in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply for original sizes or modern 3ply for smaller, and modern 2ply for tiny newborn. To fit from 6 months to 2 years.

Bestway A2570: Great vintage baby matinee and cardigan knitting pattern 1940s. This little pattern is one of my favourites as it produces such a nice finish and retro look, I do this one often and sometimes a set can be found on my baby clothes pages Alpaca Angels in either alpaca or cashmere for sale. There are instructions for a matinee coat with collar and cardigan, bonnet and bootees. The matinee is to fit 23 inch chest and the cardigan is to fit 21 inch chest, if worked in modern 3ply it will come up a size smaller. Always work a tension square and remember that modern 4ply is nearer the ply used as vintage 3ply.

Bestway A2653: Great vintage baby dress, bonnet and jacket knitting pattern from 1940s. This late 1940s baby set is knitted in vintage 2ply, so try modern 3ply in a tension square. Knitted in simple garter stitch with panels of simple embroidery to set it off, sleeves and neck have easy crochet edging. It says on the front 'specially designed for the beginner at knitting or while watching television' as only well off people had televisions at that time it makes you wonder if there were many ready made baby clothes available just after the war! Both wool and clothing was rationed until late 1949.

Try modern 4ply in a tension square. Each one has a V neck and set in sleeves. There are instructions for the panel lace to fit 9-15 months or 20-21 inch chest. The simple stocking stitch with embroidered spots will fit 15-12 months and is for a 21-22 inch chest. And the little ridge pattern one at the centre of the picture is to fit birth -6 months or 19-20 inch chest. If smaller sizes are needed try modern 3ply. Always work a tension square.

Bestway A2706: Great vintage baby dress set knitting pattern from 1940s. This type of set was often known as an afternoon set as baby would be redressed after lunch in a pretty outfit ready for visiting or going for a walk with the pram. There are instructions for a dress, jacket and bonnet. A simple panel lace design with super satin ribbon bows to fasten bonnet and jacket and four small buttons for dress to fasten at shoulder, there is a ribbon at waist. To fit 21 inch chest knitted in 3ply.

Bestway B2727: Great vintage baby knitting pattern from 1940s for pram set. There are instructions for coat, leggings, bonnet and mittens in a simple but effective design, knitted in vintage 4ply to fit 24 inch chest, so try in a tension square with both the modern 4ply and modern double knitting to see which knits better and again if you want a smaller size try using modern 3ply, a tension square will give you the stitches per inch so you can see which will fit the size you want better. Don't forget that pram coats usually go over other clothes so they are generally a size bigger than required to allow easy movement for baby.

Bestway A2730: Fabulous 1940s vintage baby knitting pattern for shawl, sleeping bag and cover. This is a super pattern with instructions for a sweet little hot water bottle cover, cot cover with satin ribbon, shawl, sleeping bag and bootees and mittens- great little gifts for new born baby, also instructions for toy ball and rattle! Shawl and bootees and mitts are in vintage 3ply and measures43 square inches, all other are knitted in what was termed thicker wool - before double knitting was common. Work tension square on needle size stated and change if needed with modern double knitting yarn. These items would be great for that retro feel at a Christmas Bazaar.

Bestway A2490: Great vintage baby vest knitting pattern from 1940s. This lovely wartime pattern has instructions for three vests to knit for baby. Birth to 6 months and 6 to 12 months sizes. Two are knitted in vintage 2ply and one in vintage 3ply. So try modern 3ply and modern 4ply for these.
