mans jumper for the army 1940s SS41-1-8w2: Great vintage services polo jumper over knitting pattern from 1941. This design was made for men in the services to keep warm whilst on duty and away form home. Cable panels are interesting, to fit 37-39 inch chest and knitted in 4ply, the tension shows it might knit well in modern double knitting. Nice deep rib and set in sleeves. Change to a size larger needles for 40 inch chest.

Submariner Jumper: Great vintage polo neck jumper knitting pattern for a thick jumper as worn by Submariners in World War 2. There are instructions to knit this one in vintage double knitting that would have been similar to a thick Aran used today and it would have been made from oiled hardwearing pure wool to keep out the weather (try a thick aran for this one as tension is 5st and 6 rows to and inch on size 7 imperial needles 4.5mm) To fit 36 and 38 inch chest. Always work a tension square. Gumboot socks included.

Vogue 102w2: Great vintage knitting pattern for polo neck sweater 1940s. This pattern also has instructions for a pair ribbed socks. Sweater to fit 38 inch chest, neck of sweater and the socks are knitted in 4 needles. Vintage 4ply is suggested so try modern double knit in a tension square, you might find that modern 4ply will work looking at the needle size. But to be weather proof these jumpers and socks were knitted quite tightly.

WWT-081+82: Great vintage knitting pattern for men in the Services in 1940s. This is a super little pattern for knitted ear protectors that could be worn with a tin helmet, rifleman's gloves in crochet and knitted shaped body belt (not shown). To be knitted in oddments of 4ply. Any SAILOR would have welcomed these little gifts. There are instructions for seaboot stocking, split-palm mittens and a hooded scarf to keep the storms at bay. The hood is knitted in a thick wool similar to our modern double knitting and the stocking are knitted in oiled seaboot wool (which was issued by the government in limited quantities - known as Dreadnought wool) similar to modern Aran. Socks are knitted on 4 needles.

Weldons 7w2: Woollies for our Sailors, Soldiers and Airmen, from 1940's. Good selection of cardigans, jumpers, slip-overs, mitts helmets scarves all authentic war time knits for that great re-enactment weekend. Vintage 3ply and 4ply used so try modern 4ply and double knitting for good fit.  Some of the pattern contained in this book I think have their roots in the First World War as they are referred to Trenchwear and the top jacket is very similar to one my great-grandad wore when he helped in the WW1 as a volunteer fireman in Kent.

This pattern is for hospital boots for injured feet, the lace up the front so are easy to get on and would fit over bandaging or even plaster. Knitted in thick wool with rings sewn behind the button holes for the laces and felt used for the sole. also included instructions for carpet slippers and hospital stockings.

Weldons 8-4w2: Great vintage hospital operation jacket knitting pattern from WW22. 1940s This is super! The jacket is laced together at the shoulders and sleeves, similar to some hospital gowns today. This allowed for injured arms to still be covered and the garment removed without disturbing any bandaging. All edges are bound and the three pieces are tied together along the top of the arms and shoulders  press studs could also be used, it can be either knitted or crocheted. So useful even today. Will fit up to 44 inch chest.

Weldon 8-8w2: Great vintage Head Comfort Helmets for hospitals WW2 1940s. These helmets helped to hold dressing in place and made patients with head wounds feel less traumatised. They were either as shown or with open fronts for easy access to dressings, a scarf can be added for neck comfort and as field hospitals were often cold this was also a benefit. There are instructions to knit one and crochet one including the scarf.

Weldons 8-10w2: Great vintage wartime knitting pattern for hot water bottle cover WW2 1940s. This cover is for the stone type of bottle used well into the 1950s - we had them when I was little. This pattern also comes with a slipper design seen below.hospital slippers with sole, but cork, felt or leather can be used. Knitted in moss stitch, the ankle flaps can be pulled up for extra warmth. Size 9, but can be made to fit other sizes. Knitted in double knitting wool.

See below for  a couple from this book.20 pages of great designs as shown on the front page. Chest measurements 38-40 chest. There are instructions for fancy rib V neck, Zip lumber jacket, a reversible sleeveless pullover, polo neck fancy stitch sweater and plain round neck (this one goes up to 44 inch chest) 2 different patterns for a V neck sweater for the air-raid warden!these two are 36 and 38 inch chest. A plain v neck 39 inch chest, cable and rib, rib sleeveless pullover small size 34 inch chest.
