Bestway 1826: Great vintage knitting pattern from the 1940's for swim trunks - to fit hips small 27"-34"  medium 29"-36" large 31"-39" knitted in vintage 3ply , so try modern 4ply in a tension square. The fabric needs to be firm to keep shape and avoid 'soggy bottom syndrome' when wet! change needles if needed.

Bestway 2345: Great boy's fig leaf sun pants knitting pattern from 1940s. This lovely pattern is just the thing for the boy who likes to be noticed! These little pants are knitted in a few ounces of modern 4ply and will fit 1-4 years. To fit 22-26 inch hips. The pants are knitted in garter stitch (all plain knitting) and then leaves are knitted separately then stitched on. Great knitting project for competitions and fun gifts. Brought out during the war years, so economy upper most in the knitters remit!

KB6-122Msw: Great vintage knitting pattern for boys and mens swim trunks from 1940s. The Man's are knitted in double vintage 3ply yarn to provide a firm fabric. For the men's trunks always work a tension square and remember that swim wear needs a firm fabric so is often knitted on needles smaller than you would think for the ply - no 'soggy bottom syndrome' here! To fit average man, tension will give an idea of size - 7 st to an inch. Unstretched about 27 inches at waist, hips about 30 inches, then there is a good amount of stretch if pure wool is used. Size is easily adjustable in these simple patterns. A webbing belt is added. These are very smart and very retro! You get instructions for both pairs.

Try modern double knitting, the fabric needs to be firm to stay in shape if the garment is intended to be used in the water.

To fit 36-38 inch chest, for a largetr size try a thick wool. Patons 2895: Great vintage pattern for man's swimsuit from the 1930's, to fit chest 37-39 inches, knitted in vintage 4ply, try a tension square before knitting, pattern advises that knitting should be firm so that there is minimal expansion when the suit is wet! One must avoid the bathing suit sagging! great series of pictures on the back page of vintage styles of swimwear. Great social history item.

Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply - to fit average young man (from the 1920s and 30s!) Don't forget that the fabric needs to be firm to avoid the 'soggy bottom syndrome'  This one also has the low front hiding the gusset. To get a bigger size go up  needle size or ply, but don't forget to allow more yarn if you do this.

The swim suit has a chest measurement of 21", that will stretch and 24" at wides part, again will stretch. The trunks are just over 23" at the widest part, will stretch. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square - beware of tension in swim wear, it must be tight to keep shape when wet.

Weldons 646-4: Great vintage knitting pattern for boys swim suit with vest top and belt 1933. Knitted in vintage 4ply to fit 29 inch chest unstretched - so would probably go up to a 31-32 inch chest. Change needles or ply to get  slightly bigger size. Tension on this on is 7 stitches and 9 rows to an inch on size 10 needles (3.25mm)
