The patterns on these pages are genuine designs and patterns produced during the years of the Second World War 1939-1945 and were approved by various councils and commitees concerned with the comfort of our fighting boys and girls overseas and in the many hospitals around the UK and at Red Cross stations all over the world in the midst of battle.

ARP Jacket: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies ARP jacket from 1940s. This jacket was warn by girls when on patrol, Air Raid Patrol, the hood is lined and the fit is sleek and warm. To fit 34-36 and knitted in a 3ply that probably would have been nearer 4ply. Always work a tension square. For extra warmth there is zip up the front. See below in Copleys 1170 for similar jacket, also Weldons 14 below for gloves, adition hood and scarf for ARPs.

Knitted in vintage 4ply, so try modern double knitting  as 4ply was thicker in those days - great for re-enactment weekends, especially with this British weather! Be authentic! Bestway 139w2: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies knitwear in the forces during Second World War. There are instructions for  sleeveless gilet or jerkin with tassel, socks, gloves and helmet to match knitted in vintage 4ply, so try modern double knit as modern 4ply is a bit thinner than that of the 1940's. Jerkin fits 36" bust, use smaller or larger needles to change size.

Bestway 908w2: Isn't this fabulous? War-time pattern for the girls in the W.A.A.F - my mother was a driver in air force during the war and instantly recognised this pattern - every girl knitted in those days, even their stockings and underwear if you wanted to keep warm in chilly billets. This one is to fit a trim 32-34 inch bust. (easy to enlarge, just add a few stitches at each side to make up width - work a tension square first to establish how many stitches you need per inch or knit in a thicker ply)

Knitted in worsted which similar to our double knitting, but always work a tension square (gauge). Here is a selection of essential items for the girl on active service in the 1940s. Instructions for a waistcoat (vest) and tank top, stockings, gloves and a scarf. The slipover can be worked with or with out sleeves and in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square to fit 32-34 and 34-36. The waistcoat is to fit 34-36 and knitted in 4ply, so try modern double knitting. All other garments to fit average woman. A must of the re- enactment weekends or stage.

LSS-39-Celia: Great vintage service jumper knitting pattern from 1939. Although uniforms were supplied replacements were often slow in getting to the services so relatives and ladies in the services were encouraged to knit. This easy to knit V neck jumper in stocking stitch would have been good for any service, regular or volunteer. Nice deep rib, fitted sleeves and V neck to show tie.  This young lady is part of the Fire Watch Service. The jumper pattern is to fit 34-36 inch bust and is in a ply which would have knitted as a modern 4ply - try a merino wool in navy, khaki, olive green, grey airforce blue etc. Very basic but at the time much needed. Great for re-enactment and period week ends.

LWW2792: Great vintage ladies World War Two jumper for Land army and stockings (long socks) 1940s. Knitted in vintage 4ply which knitted up as modern 4ply. Always work a tension square. The Jumper is to fit 36 inch bust and is in simple stocking stitch with a nice deep welt. Long socks has simple double rib turnover and are knitted on 4 needles, very fine one! Auto heel and flat toe. To fit between 9 and 10.5 inch foot - this is adjustable.

Patons 766: Great vintage ladies wartime service stockings knitting pattern 1940s. This pattern was for ladies in the services, and includes instructions for scarf and gloves as well, all knitted in vintage 4ply. Try modern 4ply in a tension square. Knitted in two needles. There is no size for this one, but should be adjustable as it is in plain stocking stitch - just allow more wool if you are taller or have larger feet than average.

This is a rare find, a genuine jumper and pair of long socks knitting pattern that were worn by the Land Army Girls in the early 1940s. To fit 34 inch bust and the socks to fit average foot - knit to fit. Knitted in 4ply. Always work a tension square.

RAF Ladies Sleeveless and long sleeved Jumper: Great authentic World War two knitting pattern from the Royal Air Force Comforts Committee for ladies slip over or tank top to fit 34-38 inch chest and is knitted in vintage 4ply, so try modern 4ply as tension suggests this would work well. 4 double pointed needle needed for the arm hole and V rib, but this can be done on two needles or a circular needle if preferred. Also included in this pattern are instructions for a long sleeved jumper and .Ladies Gloves: Great authentic World War two knitting pattern from the Royal Air Force Comforts Committee for ladies gloves , fingerless mittens and a scarf are included in the pattern.

Sirdar 767w2: Service Woollies For Woman: Helmet and gloves: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies helmet to be worn under tin hat! Knitted in modern 4ply yarn from the above book. Also included in this pattern are a pair fingerless gloves and plain gloves. Always work a tension square.

Sirdar 767-1w2: This is one of the vintage knitting patterns from the book above to keep land girls warm in those early winter mornings. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply - it was layers in those days that counted. To fit bust 34" use larger needles or double knitting for bigger sizes - if you do this make sure you have enough extra wool - don’t forget that tension square. Also includes instructions for a pair of ankle socks.

This design was made for ladies in the services to keep warm whilst on duty and away form home. Fancy panels are interesting, to fit 34-36 inch bust and knitted in 4ply, the tension shows it might knit well in modern double knitting. Nice deep rib and round neck.

There are instructions for cravat scarf, gauntlet style gloves on two needles no ply given, but a tweed type of wool was used. Stockings on 4 needles also in 4ply and rib socks in 4ply on 4 needles as well as a man's pair of socks. Great fun to knit for the Service Girls at the re-enactment gathering.

Weldons 14-14w2: VAD Ward Comforts: Great vintage knitting pattern for hospital comforts 1940s style. This is from the above book that was issued in the early 1940s to help wounded service people as well as those injured in bombing raids all over Britain. The stone hot water bottle was still in use as the cover here shows and the simple spiral bed socks was a common pattern and easy for volunteers to knit. Don’t forget if doing re-enactment scenes most people would be knitting this type of thing or socks and scarf, mittens or knee warmers for the services in their down time. Men, women and children would be knitting!

This cosy little top would be worn under the uniform to keep out the night chills. To fit 34-36 inch bust and knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply in a tension square and change needles if needed. There are instructions for long or short sleeves. This was an indispensable pattern for all service women to be able to knit you own warm stockings was a great boon as was the woolly knickers pattern below! To fit 30.5 inch leg and 9.5 foot, but both were adjustable. Knitted in vintage 3ply, so try modern 4ply in a tension square. Service Knickers: Great vintage knickers or pants knitting pattern 1940s. My mother said she had several pairs and was very glad of them on chilly nights at the lonely Air Fields during 1942 -1945 when she was serving in WAAF. Easy to knit and snug to wear - even in these chilly days! To fit 26-29 inch waist. Knitted in vintage 3ply so try modern 4ply for a better fit.

Wolsey 531: Great vintage knitting pattern for ladies jumper from 1940s. This simple to knit jumper was ideal for the service knitted the correct colour. To fit 34 inch bust and knitted in a yarn that was similar to modern 4ply. There are instructions for jumper shown in plain stocking stitch and tank top or sleeveless pullover.
