vintage knitting patterns for long johns and vest from 1920s

HKU-6 Long Johns and Vest: Great vintage mens knitting pattern for underwear from 1920s. This set is knitted in what was known as vest wool which was a light weight 3 or 4ply wool with a loose twist to give it warmth without weight. A modern fine 4ply should work, do a tension square to see if you will get the same measurements. The Vest is to fit 38-40 inch chest and the pants are for a 36-38 inch waist and with a change of needles a 40 inch waist which shows you how to get a larger size if needed. If going for a larger size than stated allow some extra wool. The waist and button band on the pants is reinforced with a sateen cotton insert (instructions given). Leg measurements given as 22 inside leg or as required and outside leg 41 or as required.

KB1-178uw: Great vintage knitting pattern for men's vest and pants 1940s. This super pattern is for classic vest and trunks worn in the 1940s. The instructions are for pants to fit waist 28, length at side 16.5 inches and vest to fit 38 inch chest. Knitted in vintage 2ply so try modern 3ply and for a larger size try modern 4ply (but allow more yarn if you do this) The pants have elastic braid at the waist, which can be bought still at fabric shops. I think they are fabulous and great for that authentic finish if you do re-enactment weekends. The pattern includes instructions for a pair of Long Johns from the same era. KB5-135uw: These Long Johns are from the 1940s. This pattern is so useful for men who have outdoor hobbies - fishing, riding etc. keeps warm and are slim fitting to wear under modern tighter outer wear. The legs can be made longer or shorter as wished. The length stated is 22 inches down outside leg, there are no other measurements given so are probably for average men. Vintage 3ply is suggested so try modern 4ply knitted to 7st to an inch and 9 rows to an inch on size 9 needles (old sizes)  Looking at the tension it would seem that the hip measurement will be around 30 inches before stretching. Don't forget that wool will stretch well, but it is easy to add more stitches once you know how many you knit to an inch, just allow more wool.
